Odors Come From a Source — Not From the Air

Air fresheners put a stronger scent on top of a weaker one. Within hours your nose adjusts, and the smell is back. The only thing that removes an odor permanently is removing what is producing it.

Almost every household smell has a physical cause somewhere in the room: something absorbed it, something spilled and was never fully cleaned, or something is damp that should not be. Until that is dealt with, every spray and plug-in is temporary by design.

Our odor work runs in a specific order, and the order is the part that matters. We locate the source first. We clean it properly. We disinfect the area so nothing is left growing and producing more smell. Then we treat the soft surfaces that absorbed it, and only at that point do we use an odor treatment.

Used that way an odor treatment finishes the job. Used first, which is how most people try it, it just covers a problem that is still there.

How We Do It

Four steps, always in this order. Skipping straight to the last one is why the smell came back last time.

1. Find the Source

We go where smells hide — under and behind appliances, under sinks, inside refrigerator seals, along the base of cabinets, into the drains. Most sources are at floor level and most are somewhere nobody wants to look.

2. Clean It Properly

The residue producing the smell gets removed, not wiped over. That usually means moving something, and it is the step that decides whether the odor comes back.

3. Disinfect the Area

Professional-grade disinfectant on the source and the area around it, so nothing is left growing and producing more odor once we leave. The same products we use for germ prevention.

4. Treat What Absorbed It

Carpet, upholstery and soft furnishings hold odor long after the source is gone. These are treated, and an odor treatment goes on last — finishing the job rather than hiding it.

You have cleaned, sprayed and aired the room out and it returns within a day. That is the clearest sign the source is still there.

For a smell that has been building for years, expect a large improvement straight away and the last of it to fade over the following few days — soft furnishings release absorbed odor gradually, so the result keeps improving after we leave.

Cigarette smoke is the most stubborn, because it settles into walls, ceilings, cupboards and every soft surface in the house. It improves a great deal with thorough work, and the more of the property that gets treated the better the result.

If a smell is being caused by something structural — a plumbing fault, a roof leak, standing water somewhere it should not be — cleaning will not hold until that is fixed. We will tell you if that is what we find rather than take the job and let it come back.

A useful test before you call: leave the house for an hour, then walk back in and notice the first few seconds. You cannot smell your own home — your nose filters out constant background odors within minutes — so that first impression on returning is the most accurate read you will get.
